Hello and welcome to the Kologarn guide from learn2playwow.com.
Summary: Kill the right arm 1st , run away from the eyebeams, alternate tanks according to their debuff, do aoe dps.
Looking more closely at the encounter we see that Kologarn is actually made out of 3 separate attackable parts: The Right Arm, The Left Arm and The Body. The hit boxes for the arms and body are fairly large and they overlap each other. Since any damage done to any of the arms will get transferred back to Kologarn, it is recommended that you try to maximize your dps by using cleave and aoe type abilities such as whirlwind, divine storm or multi-shot.
Melees can position themselves behind the tank and then they can select, face and dps the right arm while also doing area of effect damage to the rest. It is important to mainly dps the right arm because it's stone grip attack is considered to be the most dangerous. On heroic this attack stuns and deals a significant amount of damage to 3 raid members. If the raid members are not released within 15 seconds they will be killed instantly. Thus, in order for the raid members to be released, the hand needs to be destroyed or to take a sufficient amount of damage.
Once the right arm has been destroyed some adds, called Rubble, will appear directly under it. At this point dps must move away from the arm and leave the add tank enough time to get aggro. The right arm re-spawns in 1 minute, so , until then, dps can move to the body or to the left arm. The left arm does a periodic attack called Shockwave. This attack does aoe damage to the entire raid. A shockwave combined with Focused Eyebeams can take down a raid member. It makes it easier for the healers to keep everyone at full health if healer assignments for both tanks and groups are given before the battle.
Focused Eyebeam is another ability that you will need to look out for. This ability targets a raid member, usually ranged, and then slowly focuses on him, and follows him around while doing massive damage. Good positioning as well as a “ runaway path” is what’s important here.
It is best to have most of your ranged raid members in spread out formation on the right side of the room. When one gets targeted he is to move towards the exterior wall and then towards the left side of the room. Ranged will want to avoid getting too close to the right arm in order to avoid the adds that appear when it dies.
Tanks should be aware of the Crunch Armor debuff. Each application reduces armor by 25%. On normal difficulty this debuff lasts 6 seconds, thus tank switching is not really necessary. However , on heroic this debuf lasts 45 seconds and stacks up to 4 times.
If Kologarn has threat on someone not in melee range of him he will do a massive attack on the entire raid that will probably result in a wipe. In order to avoid this, you can simply enter the battle with 3 tanks: 1 for adds and 2 for Kologarn. The 2 Kologarn tanks will always stay in melee range and they will switch agro according to who has the debuff.
After killing the right arm about 2 or 3 times, if you see the left arm almost going down from aoe, it makes sense to have your dps switch to it so that you take down another part of Kologarn’s life.
