Hello and welcome to the Twin Val’kyr guide from learn2playwow.com.

As you start the fight you will notice 4 portals appearing around the room. Players can click on these portals to get a light or dark essence, depending on the portal. It is best to have your raid split in 2 major groups with each group taking on a different essence.

The Twin Val’kyr encounter is all about the light and the dark essences .It about being able to switch between these essences really fast when the right time comes. I’ve often seen players confused about the light/dark mechanics and so I’m going to spend some time detailing the light and dark issue so as to make it as clear as possible.

The role of the essences is to make the player more powerful against one of the twins yet more vulnerable against the other. Think of it as … the light is fighting against the dark. Players having the light essence are to dps the dark boss, named Darkbane. Players with the dark essence dps the light boss named Lightbane. Each time you switch boss you must also switch essence. Players should always be aware of their essence.

The tanks have to be of the same essence as their target so as to take less damage. This means they will also do less damage. A tank doing less damage means a tank that has issues holding threat. So if you are a dps, give the tanks in a beginning a decent amount of time so that they can get some threat, also you can just simply switch targets when you are reaching dangerous threat levels.

Periodically you will notice a fairly large number of light and dark spheres appearing around the edges of the room. If you or someone around you hits a sphere that is of opposite color than your essence than you take some damage. If you hit a sphere that is of the same color as your essence then you get 7 buff points.

When you reach 50 buff points you get a short speed buff. When you reach 100 buff points you do increased damage for 20 seconds.

The bosses only have 2 major abilities. Both of them need to be understood and dealt with properly. The 1st one is a spell called Vortex. It will be either a Dark Vortex or a Light Vortex, depending on which of the two bosses is casting it. Everyone, including tanks has to switch to the right essence in time or else they will take heavy damage.

The default warning should be enough to save you. It tells you exactly what you need to do. For example :” Edyis Darkbane is casting Dark Vortex, switch to dark essence!” Being of the same essence as the boss casting the vortex also makes you gain buff points.

The other ability that you will need to watch out for is called “Twin’s Pact”. The casting Val’kyr gets a shield around it, just like the priest’s shield, and then starts casting. Upon completion of the cast Twin’s Pact heals the two Val’kyr for 20% of their health. Thus you must dps the casting boss to bring it’s shield down and then you have to interrupt. You can’t interrupt while the shield is up.

Bringing down the shield fast enough is the issue here. All dps must switch to the caster. Simply put: when you get the raid warning : “ Boss begins to cast Twin’s Pact” go dps the one with the shield. If your target doesn’t have a big glowing easy to notice shield then switch essence and switch target.

Since the bosses share the same health poll there is a tendency for the dps not to switch back to their initial assigned essence. After one of the two abilities was used they remain with the same essence and thus dps the same boss.

This does save some time as you don’t have to move around so much but, on the other hand, when the spheres appear there will be not enough people to take the spheres of the other color.

Also and even more importantly, if everyone is dpsing only 1 boss, let’s say, the light boss, and the dark boss starts casting the heal, then you risk not being able to interrupt it in time because everyone has to go through the essence change before they can dps properly. Thus it is important for dps to switch back to their starter essence.

You will also notice a lot raid dot damage going on. Aoe heals and hots are important as keeping everyone at almost full hp helps avoid unnecessary deaths from sphere damage.
